Identifying Mathematically Gifted Children

15 April 2022

This project seeks to create an effective tool for identifying mathematically gifted children. To achieve this, we’ve developed the Giftedness-Quality (GQ) Test, which includes a simple yes/no questionnaire for parents and three test papers assessing math, memory, and logical thinking in children. Built on a new theoretical framework for giftedness, the GQ Test addresses the limitations of traditional Intelligence-Quality (IQ) Tests in identifying gifted students.

The preliminary GQ Test has already been tested in several schools in Hong Kong and China, as well as the Hong Kong Association for Parents of Gifted Children. The results have been very promising, showing greater efficiency and accuracy compared to existing IQ tests.

We have published a book Shining Like Stars: A Nurturing Guide for Gifted and Talented Children, co-authored with Prof. Yan Kong (psychology professor, University of Science and Technology of China) who has dedicated over 30 years to gifted education. Looking ahead, we plan to work closely with Prof. Kong to develop a larger-scale version of the GQ Test. Our goal is to refine and expand this evaluation tool so that it gains international recognition and becomes a valuable resource for identifying and supporting gifted children worldwide.
